I am passionate about programming and design and the challenge of turning user-centric designs into real-life applications.

It started here…

Sinclair ZX81

I fell in love with programming when I was 16 years old. My first computer was a Sinclair ZX81 with 1K of memory. I still have my old computer with its original box! Basic was my first computer language and this was my first program…

A big “thank you” to Mrs. Stephanie Cleasby (my first computer science teacher). She was awesome!

From the UK to the US

British Screen Bean

Whilst working for Oracle Corporation in the UK, I was selected to work on a short-term project at the company’s headquarters in the Bay Area. It didn’t take long to fall in love with the California lifestyle so when an opportunity to move to the US on a permanent basis arose, it was quickly taken!

I do manage to sneak back to the UK on a regular basis to see my family. My parents have always been very supportive and a big inspiration. Of course, I also have to restock on Cadbury’s Dairy Milk chocolate, Twiglets and Midget Gems!

In my spare time…

I’m petrified of flying, but love to travel and explore new places. I love to hike through rain forests and jungles (but watch out for snakes)! I also enjoy swimming with the native fish.

In September 2016 I decided to get back into karate and signed up at West Coast Martial Arts Academy. I am currently an orange belt and working hard towards my purple belt.

I got hooked in to cycling when I was persuaded to take part in the Birmingham to Oxford bike ride by my friends at 3i. I’ve completed a few long distance rides, including the Tour de Poway!

Graphic Design…

I enjoy working on graphic design projects using both Illustrator and Photoshop. After creating a suite of karate posters for West Coast Martial Arts Academy, their event attendance increased significantly.

Many of my graphic design pieces have been for fun and skill development.  My sons are always happy to get a new poster for their bedrooms.

A selection of my graphic design work is shown below.

Mistakes are always forgivable, if one has the courage to admit them.

Hooked on Photography

I’ve had a camera in my hand since the age of 12, which generally annoyed my teachers at school! Whilst most of my photography is for fun, I have provided component photography for different work projects. My main focus is landscape and wild-animals.

On a regular basis I take a Zoo photography workshop at San Diego zoo. Workshops focus on different aspects of photography: long lens, macro, reptiles and larger animals. Where else can you get up-close-and-personal with your “own” snake!
